Q. How can I let people know where I am
registered?
A. Many engaged couples
are having wedding websites built to announce their engagement. This
way you can post all the wedding information, pictures and where you’re
registered at for everyone to
see. You can also place registry cards in with shower invitations. Although
it’s ok to put these in shower invitations, DON’T send registry
cards with your wedding invitations. It’s just tacky.
Q. How can I ask for money instead of
a gift?
A. There really isn’t any way of telling people this without
being tacky. However, you can tell your family and they can pass the
word. Just make sure they don’t tell people that it was your
idea.
Q. What are the Matron or Maid of Honor's
duties?
A. The main role of the Maid/Matron of Honor is to help the bride
with the wedding planning. Usually, this includes hosting the bridal shower,
helping the bride get dressed on her wedding day, holding the bride's bouquet
during the wedding ceremony and witnessing the signing of the marriage license.
Plus, the Maid of Honor usually goes with the bride to bridal shows, vendor visits and
bridal salons in addition to her other duties.
Q. Should I tip my wedding vendors?
A. May vendors, especially the caterers will include everything
they expect to receive in their original bill. However, it’s
always a good idea to tip someone who goes above and beyond what you expected. That
holds true especially for your photographer, wedding consultant, disk jockey and limo driver. If you’re
still concerned about it, just ask them what they expect. If you, as
the bride, are too shy, have your maid of honor do it. (You can return
the favor when it’s her turn to get married.)
Q. What will be our biggest wedding budget
expense?
A. Your reception, including the food and beverages, can average
50-65% of your total budget. However, the reception location you select and
how many guests you invite will have a lot to do with your budget. It’s
very easy to go over your budget. In fact, over 50% of couples do. So
if it’s important to stay within your budget, cut back.
Q. Should I purchase airline tickets for
our honeymoon using my married name or maiden name?
A. In most cases name changes don’t occur until after the honeymoon. So
it’s important to make the arrangements in your maiden name. Airport
security is really tight these days and they won’t let you on the plane
if your picture identification doesn’t match the name on your ticket.
Q. Who should I invite to the rehearsal
dinner?
A. You should invite all those who will take part in the wedding
ceremony, including: spouses or dates of all adult attendants, parents and
grandparents of the bride and groom and your Officiant.
It is not necessary to invite the musicians or soloist unless they are close friends or family. If you are having small children in the wedding, the parents of the children should be invited. You can always invite other family members who are not part of the ceremony and out-of-town guests to join your rehearsal dinner too. Always remember that this is your day. Invite whoever you want.
Q. What are some other ideas for transportation
besides the traditional wedding limousines?
A. Many Alaska rental car companies don’t carry specialty cars
like Hummers or convertibles. But there are some. The nice thing
about renting a car is that you can keep it for the whole day or weekend. If
the car idea isn’t your cup of tea, try a horse drawn
carriage or even a dog sled.
Q. What is appropriate to wear for a second
wedding?
A. No matter if it’s your second, third….wedding, the
focus is still on the dress. Many second brides choose a simpler, more
elegant dress. And they choose a floor length or cocktail dress that
is off-white or pastel. Although it’s not your first wedding,
you’re still the bride and can wear whatever you want.
Q. Are there any bridesmaid dresses styles
that look great on all body types?
A. Try A-line dresses which are fitted throughout the bodice and
gradually widen. The Basque waist line (low waist usually ending in
a “v” shape) is a good idea too.
