Financing your wedding or honeymoon.

For most couples, the time between getting engaged and celebrating the big day is a whirlwind filled with a myriad of details that need lots of personal attention. One of those details that's often overlooked is how much is it going to cost? Are you paying for it as a couple or is your family? If you are, how are you going to pay for it?Well, we have some advice from some experts in the field of finances who will help with those questions.

Question: As a couple, we're paying for everything but can't afford much. Can we still have a beautiful wedding?

Answer: You most certainly can. There are many ways you can cut down on the cost of things. For example, instead of purchasing that designer pair of shoes at the local bridal shop, try JcPenney's or even Payless. Both these places offer inexpensive, beautiful and comfortable shoes. Many times people can't tell anyway whether you're wearing designer foot gear or not. However, if you're wearing a dress that really shows your shoes, splurg on nice shoes and cut down on something else like your jewelry. The key is to pick the items that won't really make a difference in your wedding pictures ( flowers, jewelry, shawl or wrap, catering, etc.) and cut down on the cost of those things.

Question: We decided that going in debt for our honeymoon was well worth it. Any advice on the best place for financing?

Answer: Yes. Many local banks have loan programs called Signature loans that are unsecured. The interest rates are higher but it's quick cash when you need it the most. You may also try vacation companies who offer packages with airfare, hotel and ground transportation already included. Another great option is a cruise. That way you know what the total price is going to be and you can use their in-house credit department to finance it. There's no surprises once your honeymoon is over and you pay low monthly payments.

Question: Any advice on how to save money on our honeymoon in the first place?

Answer: Like most events in life, careful planning will help you stretch your dollars to accommodate what you and your spouse most want to do on your honeymoon while avoiding the extra charges that can quickly suck up your cash. Start with an idea of how much you want to spend, because without a budget or some type of spending limit, costs can escalate quickly.

When planning your honeymoon, consider these cost-saving tips:

  1. Postpone your honeymoon.
  2. Ask for freebies and barter for services.
  3. Scout deals out in advance.
  4. Plan a destination wedding.
  5. Consider a package or all-inclusive.
  6. Cut back on the length of your trip

It doesn't make much sense to weigh every dollar invested in your wedding if you're going to spend like a sailor on the honeymoon. Just remember that after the honeymoon is over and reality kicks in, make sure you're not kicking yourself (or your spouse) over how much money you borrowed or spent.

The average newly married couple spends $3,400 on a one-week getaway, according to a Conde Nast Bridal Infobank survey.

Favorite destinations include Hawaii, the Caribbean and Mexico, with more distant destinations such as Tahiti and Europe gaining in popularity, says Janet Hyman, founder of Travel Duet.

Hyman stresses that it's important for the couple to really think about what kind of trip they want and what type of bill when they get home.
